We supply a lot of retractable safety covers to our customers, yet many do not know what this piece of safety equipment actually does. In this article we will briefly describe what the retractable safety cover is used for and what applications you might find a used in.

What is a Retractable Safety Cover?

The retractable safety cover is a device that is used to cover a pinch points or to protect operators from flying debris. While it is called a cover, it is actually more of a guard. They consist of a roller assembly which has within it a spring mechanism. This spring mechanism takes up the slack of the material and keeps it tight.

the material which is used on the safety cover is most commonly an 18 ounce vinyl. This vinyl material is the most economical and serves as an adequate guard for most applications. However, there are certain applications which require a retractable safety cover material which is resistant to extreme temperatures. For these applications, we use a Kevlar material which can withstand temperatures which would melt a traditional vinyl.

Common Applications and Users

The most common application that we see these retractable safety covers used for is machine guarding. A typical application would include a machine which has an open area that presents a danger to an operator who has to stand nearby. To cover this area, the safety cover can be mounted to one side of the opening and the material tip is then mounted to the opposite side. Then as the machine moves forward and backwards the guarding is extended and retracted. If the machine does not move, but rather there is just an opening that needs to be covered, then the operator is responsible for attaching and detaching the retractable safety cover.
